TECHTIPS
(ScopeCheck Continued)
The resulting patented invention utilized the following:
• Low voltage, low frequency sinusoidal sensing signal
• Highly sensitive, low impedance detection amplifi ers
• Cathode ray tube display that would show dynamic conditions
Here’s how it works: a one volt 200Hz sinusoidal signal is applied to the base of the machine. A sensing line is
attached to the machine ram connected to the electrode which acts as an “antenna.” Both signals are amplifi ed by
high impedance amplifi ers and applied to the plates of a cathode ray tube. The resulting displays show the status

of the contact as shown in Figure 12 and Figure 13.
ScopeCheck specifi cations:
(As determined by the Moore Special
Tools Measuring Laboratory)
• Hysteresis – Ten millionths of an inch (the
difference between contact and no contact)
• Repeatability – Ten millionths of an inch
• Accuracy of pickup – Fifty millionths of an inch

In addition to its excellent pickup results, the device will also show an elliptical pattern if there is contamination
of the contact gap, such as in the case of an oil or water fi lm.
Due to the nature of the oscilloscope type display, rapid intermittent contact conditions are also displayed.
These characteristics make the device a good choice for the wobble analysis experiments.
